Counting Together Welcomes Two New Partners
Counting Together is excited to add two new partner studies to its collective efforts to forge new pathways to equity and inclusion in the American Theater. “Exploring the Landscape of Live Theatre for Young Audiences in the US” and “Audit MKE” each draw on years of data research to illuminate a corner of the theater profession and evaluate its progress on racial and gender diversity.
“Exploring the Landscape…” is a collaboration between Theatre for Young Audiences USA, and the Center for Scholars & Storytellers. Comparing the 2018-19 season and that of 2008-9, this landmark study offers the first-ever analysis of representation of gender and racial diversity of this scale to be conducted of the plays being produced for young audiences across the country, including the stories that are presented and the actors, playwrights, and directors who create them.
“AUDIT MKE: Playwrights Produced in Milwaukee Theatre 2000-2020,” conducted by Michael Cotey, sheds light on the representation of gender and race of playwrights produced in Milwaukee's live, professional theatre productions from 2000-2020. Cotey’s study analyzes 799 productions produced by Milwaukee's six Equity theatres (First Stage, Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, Milwaukee Repertory Theater, Next Act Theatre, Renaissance Theatreworks, & Skylight Music Theatre) from 2000 to 2020. It compares the race and gender of playwrights for each theatre by examining every five-year period, as well as the span of twenty years, and by comparing the 2000-01 season to 2019-20.
