RESEARCH PROJECT: Theatre Makers of Color Requirements

RESEARCH PARTNERS: Keelay Gipson, Daaimah Mubashshir, Nissy Aya

COVERAGE: Varies

In the midst of the uprising brought about by the death of George Floyd, playwright Keelay Gipson and Stacey Rose felt compelled to cease the momentum of the time to escalate substantive change within the American Theatre. They felt that work began with gaining an understanding of how Theatre Makers of Color felt they exist in the industry vs. how they actually exist. In an effort to seek this understanding, they created the Theatre Makers of Color Requirement Survey.

FINDINGS: 775 theatre makers of color completed the survey. While we are still processing results, what we have seen so far in the testimonies submitted are repeated stories of tokenism, micro-agressions, gas lighting, and great chasms between what the American Theatre promises vs what it actually provides Theatre Makers of Color. We look forward to adding the statistical an anecdotal information from this survey to this critical resource.

Our information is a blend of statistics, testimonies and recommendations. There are charts and some testimonies that could live on the counting together site.
